A ton of questions bombard me as I study this piece...
-Is she a slave woman, or just slaving away?
-Is she daydreaming of freedom, or a vacation?
-Is she angry? blinded by the sun? or is this just her natural demeanor?
-Who the hell made that hat?
It's rare in the Black Art world when lines blur between past and present. I look at her face and into her eyes, unable to determine her age, era, or blues. But she feels so familiar. Like, "I know her from somewhere, I just can't put my finger on it!" familiar. One can easily assume this to be a slave woman of past. But upon further study, I wonder. If she were slave, wouldn't she be seeking free-papers, and not a passport? Is she even on American soil? How old is her hat? Did she make it or purchase it? Without the obvious slave motifs, i.e. cotton fields, slave masters, whips, etc. etc one can't assume a thing. Thank you Alvin Burts for pushing the envelope. And thumbs up for the splash of color.
